Our energy isn’t drained from other people, in my experience. Or from our own difficult emotions, be it anger, sadness, despair, depression. Instead, it is from our protesting against these emotions and the insights for action that come from them.

When we manage to find a window, where we stop protesting and start being with anger, with despair, with joy, that presence eases the tension and creates flow. And although often scary, this new flow brings about new ideas and intentions that have the potential to alter the trajectory of our lives.

That can be easier said than done, particularly when the modeling around us is one of fighting against, suppressing or conquering any of these emotions. Naturally, that has also become our own conditioning.

It can seem like venturing into completely unchartered territory to break that cycle of relating to yourself. You may be the first in a long line of generations to explore it. No wonder it is scary.

It can be helpful to explore this different kind of relating to ourselves with a guide of any kind that suits you and that you trust, be it a mentor, therapist, coach, friend, healer, you name it. But once you do, you also set the foundation of a different life for yourself. One that springs from embracing, kindness, gratitude, and generosity.

I leave you with this question once more: What are you protesting against right now? And what do you need to embrace it?

The last experience that deeply energized me was building Buffer, a software company that got mightily successful in my eyes. And successful in a way that had heart and […]

Life advice from a book about raising dogs

I don’t have a dog. I’m thinking regularly about getting a dog as part of the intentional community I want to live. I realized how much I dislike the way my dad is raising his dog. There are commands, positive reinforcement, walks, all the usual stuff I’ve heard hundreds of times before when people talk […]

Radical Presence – An 8 Week Program to create a life you will mostly hate, occasionally love & definitely not feel indifferent about anymore

This is the saddest picture of me on the internet. I think it’s also the most honest one. When I see this picture, I feel happy and scared, because, with the help of the photographer who took it, I didn’t “modify” my facial expression in any way. I just let it hang loose and this […]
